GEOBIM Trends in Digitalization of the Construction Industry

Date: 9th October 2020 // Time: 8:30 am -11:00 am PDT

The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry continues to undergo a rapid transformation especially now with the onset of COVID. In these unprecedented times, the sector, often tagged as one of the least digitalized sectors, has been pushed to accelerate the adoption of digital tools to automate the project lifecycle as much as possible. The industry has thus embarked on a journey to embrace remote working and automation tools to limit the impact of any external factor as the pandemic going forward.

It has now become imperative for the AEC industry to imbibe the cutting-edge technologies available at their disposal. These technologies include drones, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), building information modelling (BIM), digital twins, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), advanced LiDAR systems, robots, among many other things. Today, the AEC industry is demanding these tools to plan, design, build and operate and maintain in a post-COVID environment to be more collaborative without on-site visits. The industry is, thus, refocusing and accelerating its digital investments in those mentioned above selective modern technologies to increase the agility of their organizations to deliver projects on time.

In this context, the time is ripe for the geospatial and BIM technology providers to continue playing a significant role in the AEC industry’s digital transformation with innovations, new business models and also taking advantage of emerging frontier technologies.

Understanding that the AEC industry is undergoing a digital transformation, driven by the integrated solutions, Geospatial Media and Communications is organizing a series of virtual-based high-level panel discussions, namely, GeoBuiz Engage, to understand the construction technology market globally. Conceived as a series of topical theme-based panel discussions, GeoBuiz Engage will be held across North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific to understand the geospatial and BIM technology trends; industry directions, market evolution and the transforming user behavior. Broadly, the Engage will include deliberations on:

  • Increasing penetration of geospatial and BIM data and solutions in AEC in post-COVID
  • Latest technology innovations and most profound business models in the technology value chain
  • Critical regions of future growth regional strengths and challenges of adoption
  • Expected future line of services and solutions, and vital factors driving these trends

Topic: Emerging Trends and Maturity Model of BIM for AEC Industry

Question and Answers and Panel Discussion

GEOBIM Integration for Better Design and Smart Construction
The time is opportune for the AEC industry to use the data collected from various geospatial tools such as LiDAR, 3D Scanning tools, GPR, drones, etc., and integrate it within GIS and with BIM/CAD to create a binding synergy between spatial, technical and commercial data attributes. The confluence of the two relative scales of the geospatial data and information and BIM models provides for better design and smart construction. The session shall discuss the latest trends in GEOBIM integration and the way forward and also the trends and opportunities in GIS/CAD/BIM integration.
» James H Vans Rens, Senior Vice President, Riegl USA
» Bryan Given, Senior Consultant, Digital Construction Works, USA
» Marc Goldman, Director, AEC Industry Solutions, Esri

9:50 – 10:15

GEOBIM Maturity Model (Transport and Building)
The GEOBIM Maturity Model is a coherent approach to map GEOBIM integration and its use across the construction lifecycle. The session will discuss Geospatial Media’s Maturity Model, which ranges from Level 0 to Level 3 for the transport and building sectors to mainstream the adoption of GEOBIM solutions at both technical and organizational level.
» Amr Raafat, Vice President, Virtual, Design and Construction, Windover Construction
» Tiffany Hosey, CEO, Founder and Innovator, BuilDATA Analytic | CTBIM
» Geoff Zeiss, Director, Open Geospatial Consortium | Principal, Between the Poles

Technology disruptions and innovation harnessing GEOBIM technology ecosystem (4IR technologies and immersive solutions)
The AEC industry is embracing GEOBIM solutions enabled by 4IR technologies especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud, IoT and big data solutions. The session will discuss advancements in digital construction tools and techniques happening across the construction technology ecosystem.
» Sameer Sharma, General Manager, Intel Corporation
» Tony Sabat, Director of Workflow, Kaarta
» Alec Pestov, CEO and Founder, vGIS

Subsurface Utility Mapping – Technology Trends and Directions
Subsurface Utility Mapping is increasingly being recognized as an essential component of construction project budgets. The session will discuss the latest technology trends and directions in the SUM space to accurately and reliably map the subsurface utility networks and ensure robust designing and engineering of the subsurface infrastructure.
» Rob Martindale, Program Manager, Utilities/Railroads, Colorado Department of Transportation
