Geospatial Infrastructure and Role in National Economy

Date: 13 November 2020 // Time: TBD

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged through countries across the world leaving the economies reeling in its aftermath, some more than others. With people being driven indoors and urged to avoid social gatherings, a new digital normal is arising, catalyzed by greater motivation and fewer barriers in utilizing technology-enabled solutions - especially geospatial technology-enabled solutions - in daily life. The mainstream recognition of geospatial technology as a crucial tool in making sense of data and decision-making can be considered as a silver lining.

The National Geospatial Agencies played a crucial role by making geospatial data accessible and is expected to play an even more crucial role in the economic recovery of nations, with its increased recognition as a facilitator in effective decision-making. With the mainstreaming of geospatial technology and its’ becoming of a crucial component in more sectors, it is therefore important to ensure the optimum utilization of geospatial data and knowledge. The availability and accessibility of data, common standards for data integration and interoperability, legal framework for data security and privacy, interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships etc. were identified as crucial areas in need of immediate intervention in order to maintain the momentum of geospatial adoption and thereby propel the global economy. The adoption of geospatial data and information is expected to increase further with the transition to a Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure which is driven by integration of geospatial data with 4IR technologies and building synergies with stakeholders from private sector, academia, and general populace for data collection, analysis, and dissemination. It aims to enable easy access to knowledge from geospatial data thereby making it useful to an even larger section of the society.

Objective

GeoBuiz Engage is an initiative by Geospatial Media and Communications to understand the role of National Geospatial Infrastructure in the national economy. The initiative consists of a series of regional roundtables focusing on technology innovation, market directions, business models and public policies. Broadly, the Engage will include deliberations on:

  • Evolving role and mandate of National geospatial agencies
  • Transformation of Business Model
  • Technology Innovation and Geospatial Infrastructure
  • Collaboration and Partnership

The Engage will be an exclusive space of approximately 30-35 professionals from the National Geospatial Agencies, associated government departments, private technology providers working closely with the geospatial agencies, and user organizations to discuss and deliberate on the focused topics mentioned above. The insights derived from the discussions, and the survey forms will be presented as qualitative (and if relevant) quantitative information in Geospatial Media’s annual GeoBuiz Report.
